Discover a path of radical compassion rooted in the way of Jesus.

How do we practice love and compassion for ourselves and others in a world marred by conflict and violence in our families, communities, institutions—and even our own hearts? In Compassion in Practice: The Way of Jesus, internationally renowned compassion teacher Frank Rogers introduces the spiritual path of radical compassion Jesus walked and taught, grounded in God's extravagant love for all people. This path transforms hardened hearts and brings healing and wholeness to even the most challenging situations.

In this inspiring and practical book, you'll discover a series of practices to ground and restore you through self-compassion as you cultivate an ethic of radical care that extends not only to loved ones, neighbors, and strangers, but also to enemies, opponents, and oppressors. Illuminated with extraordinary real-life stories of restorative love in action, these practices will equip you to step heart-first into a challenging world, ready to engage in a new way that beats with the pulse of compassion.

This updated and revised edition provides specific practices for compassionate social activism, more interfaith conversation, and a "compassion compass" to help orient you as you travel the path of healing and restoration.

In Compassion in Practice, you will learn:

  • The six essential dimensions of authentic compassion
  • A compassion practice that softens hardened hearts and accesses our best self
  • Spiritual exercises to cultivate compassion for yourself and others
  • The critical difference between empathy and compassion

Reviews

"If you're a clergy person, lay pastor, group leader, educator, parent, summer camp director, retreat leader, counselor, nonprofit director, or in any other position to influence others, I encourage you (even plead with you): read this book for your own benefit, and then use what you learn to teach others. Especially when too many Christians are far more interested in gaining political power than in practicing compassion, our world needs a growing movement of true Jesus-followers who are learning how to live Compassion in Practice. I am so grateful that Frank Roger's wisdom is available to us all in this insightful, practical, heart-felt book." —Brian D. McLaren, author of Faith After Doubt and The Last Voyage

“Frank Rogers invites the reader to do something radical: have compassion for self and others as modeled in the life of Jesus. Through radical, extravagant love, a space opens in the reader's heart to see friend and foe alike as part of beloved community. Rogers offers compassion practices, from breath work and visualization to text study, helping us all see God’s love made real. " —Patrick B. Reyes, Executive Vice President and Dean, Auburn Theological Seminary

“In a world where much harm, exclusion, and oppression are enacted in the name of Christ—this book provides a radical alternative in the way of abundant compassion. I am grateful to have enjoyed the long-lasting fruits of this practice personally and I am confident that spiritual leaders and seekers from all walks of life will benefit from the wisdom shared in these pages! " —Aizaiah Yong, Executive Director, Collegeville Institute for Ecumenical and Cultural Research

“Love pours through these pages like a soothing stream. Frank Rogers combines Christian wisdom, compassion science, and many practical tools and examples to help us with our hopes and sorrows. He is a remarkable writer, both tender and brilliant, lifting up the heart while finding stable footing in a shaky world. The teachings here are universal, and valuable for everyone, from any religious background or none at all. What a gem.” —Rick Hanson, Ph.D., New York Times bestselling author of Buddha’s Brain, Hardwiring Happiness, Resilient, and Making Great Relationships
